History

In 1959 the Delaware City-County Speech and Hearing Center was founded. The Center began providing testing and basic services at the local health department 25 hours per week. At that time, only six cities within the state of Ohio had speech and hearing centers in operation. The Ohio Department of Health supported the Center financially for two years as a pilot study, after which the Center was expected to rely on local funding.

Our programs expanded in 1968 to include full time Speech Pathology services. Clients in North Central Ohio began to take advantage of the growing list of services. The Center dropped the “City-County” from its name, and the Center relocated to 27 West Central Avenue. The new space rapidly became cramped as services expanded and the number of clients continued to increase.

In early November 2006 The Delaware Speech and Hearing Center moved to its current home,

a much larger building purchased at 494 West Central Avenue. This recent expansion allows the Center to better serve Delaware, one of the fastest growing communities in the state of Ohio. For the past 23 years, Guy Naples, Executive Director, aided by an active Board of Directors, and many generous donations, has ably shepherded The Delaware Speech and Hearing Center through its growth and changes.
